SANTORINI BEACHES

The beaches of Santorini show the signs of volcanic activity 3,500 years ago. Santorini has unique beaches with white, red, or black sand. In the summer, the black sand gets so hot that you'll have to have a grass mat.

PERISSA & PERIVOLOS BEACH
Are black sand beach sitting on the southern flank of Pofitis IIias, just around the mountain from Kamari, except here the sand is blacker, finer, softer, hotter and there is far less commerce and bustle to distract the sunbather. Chairs and umbrellas are for rent. Bus service to Fira. Very organized beaches.

KAMARI BEACH
Kamari is a huge gray sand beach on the northern flank of IIias Profitius (Mount Elijah). This beach hosts enormous crowds in the summertime, and is served by countless restaurants, tavernas, bars, pizza shacks, vendors, clothing shops, and lodgings. The beach and its community bustle day and night. The water turns deep quickly, and there are large waves. Chairs and umbrellas are for rent. Restrooms are only in bars and restaurants. Bus service to and from Fira is available. Very organized beach.

RED BEACH
If you take the bus to Akrotiri to see the ruins (morning is a good time to do this), you can trek on after the archaeology and visit he red sand beach nearby. The beach has fine red sand and rocks. There is a small shop here selling everything from Pepsi to prickly-pears, except watch out for the prices, they can be all wrong. There are chairs and umbrellas for rent, and paddleboats as well. Plenty of sand and good swimming, all within a mile of and ancient Minoan settlement.

Monolithos Beach

Just north of Kamari and on the eastern coast is the beach of Monolithos.
Here you will find more peace and quiet than other Santorini beaches, however with all the comforts of the other beaches as there are bungalows facilities for snacks and meals available. Very organized beach. Also, this beach has two parts, the family part and the quite part as there is a rocky line that separates them. The quite part is ideal for couples.

VLYHADA BEACH

The most impressive beach on the island. Imposing white rocks, masterpieces of nature carved into extraordinary shapes by the winds, as if Gaudi had dropped in for a swim here before designing the Pedrera. Although it has the usual lounge chairs, canteen and taverna, the restless waves and rugged rocks give the place a wild, remote feel and there are fewer people here than at other beaches. Ideal for lovers. The old tomato - processing plant, now used for wedding receptions, completes the "lunar" atmosphere. You can drive here along a proper asphalt road.
It could be the sunlight reflected off these white rocks which makes people tan here faster than on any other beach on the island . There is mini market on the road just before you arrive at the beach.

AMMOUDI BEACH
Two picturesque coves where traditional fishermen's boats remind you of simpler times. This is a place to come to eat at one of fish tavernas. For swim try and make it early in the morning or late afternoon because the beaches are small and become crowded during the middle of the day. If you want to swim at Amoudi, the best place is the rocks behind the lighthouse. You can also go across to the little church of Saint Nicholas. Also, from there you will enjoy the sunset and see how locals live.

ASPRI BEACH
You'll get here by boat from Akrotiri or Kokkini - unless you are into rock climbing! Fine, black sand, pumice stone and gray - white pebbles in the shadow of the tall, white rocks.
The most impressive of these is to be seen from the boat, in the narrow strait you'll pass trough as you arrive at the beach - have your camera ready. It's small beach, but with crystal clear water. A few lounging chairs and parasols, no crowds.

Vourvoulos beach is for those who value peace and quiet more than natural beauty. More of a cove than a beach, with a just few lounging chairs and bushes. Here and there moorings for the fishermen's boats have been cut into dark rocks. At the end of black pebble beach lies a picturesque little harbor with fishing boats and ducks.
